A mini-van from Trat bus station to Hat lek (Thai Border) is the fastest and most comfortable option.

Price is 120 Baht. They leave every hour, and the trip takes about 1.5 hours.

Another option is to take a songtaew (2 rows taxi) from the taxi station behind the day market. Those taxis are cheaper and make irregular stops along the way. Both minivans and taxis stop for a while at Klong Yai, but while the minivans would only stop for a few minutes, the songtaew may take a longer break.

Visa:

You can purchase your visa for Cambodia at the border for 1200 Baht and one passport photograph (note: US$ not accepted). You can purchase an e-visa over the internet prior to your trip (price is in US$) From the Thai/Cambodian border you can take a motorcycle taxi or a taxi to Koh Kong.

From Bangkok By bus:
Busses go from Ekkamai Eastern Station or MoChit Northern Station. There are buses from Bangkok international airport (Suvaranabhumi) as well, but they are not as frequent.

There is a bus leaving every 1-2 hours from 7am until 11.30pm to Trat Bus Station.
Cost: around 250 Baht for a 5-6 hour trip.
A private taxi should cost 3000-4000 Baht.

By plane:

There are two flights a day from Suvaranabhumi airport (BKK) to Trat airport (TDX). The flight takes 1 hour and costs 2500- 3000 Baht.

Contact Bangkok Airways, www.bangkokair.com for further information.

Transportation from Trat airport into town (around 35 km) used to be a bit complicated, as the minivans waiting there would mostly go to Koh Chang (around 400 Baht per passenger), and if you wanted to charter them to go to Trat, it would cost around 1200 Baht. But lately there’s a new taxi service that will get you to town for approximately 400 Baht.

Having said that, it’s a very well designed open-air complex with a theme-park style train and well-maintained cunstructions that look like straw huts. A bit like Cancun with a more modest budget.

A geeky geo-anectode: If you search for “Trat airport” and/or “TDX” in google maps, you’ll find dozens of places all around the region. Some even on Ko Chang . As far as we know, this item is the only place that gets even close. This one took real research.

Ferry to Ko Chang. The ferry service starts at 6:00 and goes till 18:30 or 19:00. Cars and motorcycles park on the lower deck, and passengers sit upstairs, where there’s a small cantine and a better view. On average, there’s 1 ferry an hour. You can get to the pier from a specific taxi station in town (50 Baht).

Note: they used to collect the tickets when you got on the ferry, but now the system has changed. There’s a booth at the beginning of the road to the pier, and they collect the tickets there. On the other direction, from Ko Chang to Trat, you have to keep your ticket until you leave the pier, the taxi then stops at the booth and you have to give your ticket there.

Unlike the old bus station of Trat, the new station (built 2007) is not located in the center of town, and you’ll need a taxi to take you to the markets/guest houses area.

You can take a Songthaew (literally “two rows” – Thai shared or chartered taxis) or a motorcycle taxi. A ride to the center shouldn’t cost more than 30 Baht (20 is preferable, but sometimes it depends on the number of people on the cab and the greediness of the driver).

If youre going to Ko Chang, you can take a taxi from the station to the ferry. If you decide to charter the taxi, it should cost around 150 Baht. If there are more people, it should be around 50-70 Baht. The ride takes 30-40 minutes.

Getting to Trat from Bangkok: aircon buses depart every hour (more or less – this is Thailand) from Morchit (northern) and Ekamai (eastern) bus stations in Bangkok. Service starts a 7:00 AM and runs till 23:30 PM. Sometimes there’l be more than one company selling tickets for different buses, so check out which one of them leaves sooner. Sometimes there’ll be toilets on the bus, and some comapies include cold water and a snack in their price (it should cost around 200-300 Baht). The ride takes 5-5.5 hours. The bus stops on the way for food and toilets..

If the bus breaks for some reason (broken aircon or some other technical problem), don’t be alarmed. The bus company will send another bus. These are the advantages of using a government bus, opposed to using a scam bus. If you took the bus from Morchit or Ekamai, you’re on a government bus (actually, private companies who have contracts with the government). If you took a bus from Khaosan road, it’s a scam bus. There’s no government bus station around Khaosan.

Getting from Trat to Bangkok: The above timetable (BKK to Trat) applies for the opposite direction.

Note: if you want to go to suvarnabhumi airport in Bangkok, take the bus that goes to Morchit station and tell the staff you want to get off at the airport.
